Phil and friends

So much to say…so little ability to say it. Back from night 3 of Phil (truth be told i was present for the sat and sun…streamed friday) with a nice warm glow…nothing to radical, unlike sat. night where i’m not quite sure how i found my bed..but glad i did!
I wasn’t supposed to be here

on saturday night in the port chester…but first i got shut out of dead and co via ticketbastard…then i noticed the hotel i thought i was so smart to reserve in advance super close to msg…mysteriously went from about $200 a night to $450…I’m pretty sure that’s not legal but i’ll let someone else fight that battle.I was never big on legalities!
Luck and fate were on my side though as saturday night’s show with mr. lesh was one of the best show’s i have ever had the pleasure of witnessing. Phil knows talent..and having stanley jordan on stage was one of the those rare moments where one man’s virtuosity brought the best out of the rest of those on stage. The rock and roll expressed this night exceeds the conventional definition of the genre…of course it did..as stanley is no conventional guitarist…he is a jazz master…but unlike john scofield, who is likewise a great jazz guitarist and shared Phil’s stage, stanley seems to have truly internalized the musical canon of the dead…and is moved by it as much as we are.
Case in point would have to be tonight’s rendition of comes a time where stanley felt the emotion enough during his solo to climb up on a stool when he soared up the fretboard..and then to essentially kneel down to pray to the god that is jerry garcia when he brought his solo back to the ground.
Sat. night was the more energetic of the two nights i got to witness…as one brother told me, embedded in his story of meeting mr. jordan and helping to carry his groceries at the hotel, he told stanley dark star>voodoo child>darkstar changed his life. I don’t doubt it… not for a motherf@cking second.
here’s a portion recorded badly:

i look forward to tracking down a high quality version of the whole show…you should too!!!!
Tonight, sunday, was a recreation of 11/1/85 richmond,va grateful dead…a somewhat unusual show with many a ballad…high time, the aforementioned comes a time, sailor>saint, dylan’s she belongs to me, plus a rare gloria, dancin opener, stagger lee, and a nice he’s gone>spoonful which tonight’s band choose to interject a bit of space in between.
Halloween’s show had a ton of fun covers…after midnight opened..we got a bad moon rising, werewolves, sympathy for the devil and the closer of nfa
Friday’s show had the jazz classic greensleeves, and hendrix’s little wing…all worth the effort of checking out.
Should i compare this to dead and co? I’d mostly rather not as i don’t think music is an either or type of thing…let’s enjoy it all while we still have the groove in our bones…i will say just this..phil’s band with jordan seems like the grateful dead all grown up…no panties will be thrown on stage! the transitions and jams are thought out..worthy of study…sadly i hear next weekend might be the last time phil ventures east…i hope this rumour is wrong but if not…ty phil for a lifetime of musical fulphilment…might have to drive 3,000 miles to catch you in your home ground (fuck flying..tsa bastards)
So some final thought’s…Shapiro has done a wonderful job with the cap. theatre and garcia’s would be the place i’d be every night if i lived in port chester…the port also has some great ethnic (hate that fucking word—mexican-columbian-etc…) restaurants…otherwise the place seems a bit in need of a makeover…perhaps i just need a tour guide to show me the way though.
John Kadlecik deserves more credit..not only can he play a great guitar he can sing too…If i hear anyone mention faux garcia i just might punch them in the mouth…since when is being influenced by the greatest rock guitar player who ever lived a bad thing?
oh..and as fans we are representing well…i had cab drivers..hotel staff..waitstaff all tell me they want to go to a show because of how nice we have treated them…yeah us!!! mickey’s words of be kind has had an effect!
PSSS..thanks to those who read my last review of dead and co…i constantly think i should give up this crappy blog but getting 3,000 plus folks reading a single post will keep me going…and yes critics…i know i ignore proper punctuation and the like..it’s my b.log..get over it!!!! blake out!
